DONALD LOCKE “D.L.” WHITT
WEAVERVILLE – Donald Locke “D.L.” Whitt, “the best brother we had”, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at the age of 77.
D.L. was born March 19, 1939 in Madison County to the late Donald and Eugenia Metcalf Whitt. He was a resident of both Madison and Buncombe Counties. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army. D.L. was initiated in Sunnyside Lodge 163, Portland Oregon, an honorary member of French Broad Lodge #292, a Past Master of the Vance #293 Masonic Lodge, A&A Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, 32nd degree Scottish Rite, and Worthy Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star. He retired from ABF Freight Systems where he received several awards for having driven one million safe miles. D.L. was a member of Ivy Hill Baptist Church. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by nephew, Alan Emory.
Surviving are his daughter, Debbie Austin and husband J.D.; son, Joseph Whitt and wife Michelle, all of Burnsville; sisters, Marie Emory and husband Rev. Worth Emory, Louise Gillis and husband Bill, Ann Dugger and husband Charles, Peggy Ray and husband Robert, and Edith Whitt, all of Weaverville; granddaughters, Alicia and husband Jonathan, Brittany, Hayle, Erica, Destiny; grandson, Nicky; great grandchildren, Lily Grace, Ellie and Will; and special friend Richard Norton.
His funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 10, 2017, in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville, with Reverends Worth Emory and Kelly Bryant officiating. Burial will be in West Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home.
Masonic Rites will be conducted by the Vance Lodge and the Lodge will open at 12:00 p.m.
