WOODFIN—A.V. Roberts, age 88, of 7 ½ Garden Road, died Tuesday, October 28, 2008.
Mr. Roberts was born April 30, 1920 in Buncombe County and was a resident of Buncombe County for all of his life. A.V. was a salesperson at Belks for 22 years, was formerly employed by Tops for Shoes and most recently employed with Discount Shoes. He assisted in the incorporation of the Town of Woodfin serving as former Alderman and former Chief of the volunteer ambulance service for the town. A.V. was a veteran of the US Army Infantry and a recipient of the Purple Heart, serving during World War II and the Korean War. He was a member as well as a deacon of Richland Baptist Church formerly served as chairman of the deacon board. Mr. Roberts was a member of Blackmer Masonic Lodge #170 A.F. & A.M. He was the son of the late Charles E. and Lillian Cole Roberts. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Whittemore Roberts who died in 1997; brothers, Bruce, Earl and Charles; sister, Thelma; granddaughter, Rhonda Sue Roberts and daughter-in-law, Tina Roberts.
Surviving are his daughters, Sandy Crigger of Woodfin and Sharon Summey and husband Allan of Bryson City; sons, Troy Roberts of Weaverville and Ronnie Roberts of Woodfin; brother, Bud Roberts and wife Shirley of Woodfin; ten grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville with the Revs. Nelson Ponder and Jack Gassaway officiating. Burial will be in West Memorial Park with military rites conducted by VFW Post #5483, Mars Hill Memorial Team.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
At other times, the family will be at the home of Sandy Crigger, 50 West City View Drive, Woodfin.
