ASHEVILLE - Alan M. "Snookie" Neilson, age 88 of Inglewood Road died Tuesday, September 17, 2013.
Mr. Neilson was born July 19, 1925 in Buncombe County where he resided all of his life. He graduated from NC State University in 1952 with a degree in Lumber Management. Mr. Neilson served in the US Army Air Corp during World War II. He was a decorated tail gunner in a B-17 Bomber with 21 missions over Germany. He and his wife owned and operated House of Fabrics since 1969 and he was a member of the Central United Methodist Church. He was the son of late Robert L. and Zona Palmer Neilson. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his daughter, Angie Neilson Heatwole and 9 siblings.
Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Lucille Roberts Neilson; son, Joel Neilson and wife LaRue of Candler; grandchildren, Chelsea Beaver, Jacob Neilson, Keaton Neilson, Hailey Heatwole and Hayes Heatwole; great grandson, Braiden Beaver; sisters-in-law, Sarah Boone, Susie Ray and husband Bob, Marie Flowers Ray; brothers-in-law Guy Roberts, and Fulton Roberts Jr. and wife Sally.
His funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 21, 2013 in Central United Methodist Church with Dr. Robert Blackburn officiating. Burial will be in Lewis Memorial Park with Military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post #5483, Mars Hill Memorial Team.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the church. At other times the family will be at the home of Marie Ray, 45 Jarnaul Ave., Asheville, NC 28804.
