ALAN HAIGH SHAW
ASHEVILLE – Alan Haigh Shaw, age 94 of Asheville died Sunday, April 2, 2017.
The son of the late Ralph Allen and Alice Way Shaw, he was born on November 11, 1922 in Asheville. Alan was educated in Asheville city schools, Christ School in Arden, and Biltmore Jr. College.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, participating in amphibious operations in New Guinea and the Philippine Islands.
He entered the Builders' Hardware and Specialty industry in 1946, establishing the Alan H. Shaw Company in 1953, which he managed until retirement in 1987.
Professional activities included membership in the American Society of Architectural Consultants and the National Builders' Hardware Association. He served as president of Carolina Builders' Hardware Association, and later as chairman of the Carolinas Chapter.
He was a member of St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, Reems Creek Road serving as vestryman and Junior Warden. He was also a member of the Rhododendron Royal Brigade of Guards and the Country Club of Asheville.
Active in Alumni affairs at Christ School, he served a term as president of the CS Alumni Association, Alumni Council and CS Athletic Hall of Fame Committee.
He was also active in Republican politics during the 60's and 70's, running as a candidate for City Council in 1963, and later serving as a member of the Municipal Board of Elections, of which he was chairman in 1973.
He was appointed to the Selective Service Board in 1981 and served for a number of years, including one term as chairman. Also a member of Private Industry for JTPA, a member of the board of Trustees for Thoms Rehabilitation Hospital, and on the Thoms Hospital Foundation Board from 1983 to 1995.
An active supporter of UNC-Chapel Hill programs, he served one term as director of the Educational Foundation, Inc.
He served ABCCM as a volunteer in the Medical Ministry, was a member of ABCCM Clinic Board of directors, and ABCCM Board of Directors. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of Penland-Bailey Co., Inc. from 1981 to 2001 and was President of the company for 11 years.
Alan Shaw is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Patricia Bailey Shaw and children, Margaret Shaw Watson of New Hudson, MI, Leslie Haigh Shaw of Asheville and Alan Haigh Shaw Jr. of Charlotte. He has one grandson, Mason Shaw Hill of Crossville, TN.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 8, 2017, in the St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, 812 Reems Creek Road Weaverville, NC 28787, with Father Greg Miller officiating.
