Alta Louise Ponder Edwards

WEAVERVILLE – Alta Louise Ponder Edwards, age 96, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, October 31, 2022, surrounded by her family.

Ms. Edwards was born on July 14, 1926, in Madison County. She had been a resident of Buncombe County since 1952.  She was the Librarian with Waynesville Township High School for four years, two years at Lee Edwards and 24 years at North Buncombe High School. 

She was a member of NCAE, Retired School Personnel Association, Alpha Delta Kappa, the choir at First Baptist Church Weaverville since 1952 and had also held several offices at First Baptist Church including church librarian. 

Alta always had a song in her heart and was eager to sing along with others.  She enjoyed activities of all kinds, including the Adult Senior Meal Site, especially the line dancing. Most of all Alta enjoyed being around people and brought joy to everyone she met.

She was the daughter of the late Cornelius and Elizabeth Robinson Ponder.  Also preceding her in death was her husband, Marion Wayne Edwards; sisters, Charlsie Metcalf and Thelma Ponder; and a brother, J. C. Ponder.

She is survived by two daughters, Nancy Jamerson and husband Jerry, and Lynn Peters and husband Jim; a son, Doug Edwards and wife Cindy; and two grandchildren, Heather Jamerson and Clint Jamerson and wife, Amy.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 3, 2022, at First Baptist Church Weaverville. Reverend Dr. Stuart Lamkin and Reverend Jerry Jamerson will officiate. Burial will follow at Mars Hill Cemetery, Mars Hill.

 The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm on Wednesday, November 2, 2022, at West Funeral Home.
