ANNA MAE JONES
WEAVERVILLE - Anna Mae Jones, age 72, died Friday, January 10, 2014.
Mrs. Jones was born April 8, 1941, in Brooklyn, NY, the only child of the late Chester and Victoria Jankowski. She graduated from high school at age seventeen with the Latin medal and honors.
Her first job was at the American Broadcast Company (ABC). In 1960, she moved to a national spot television representative company as a sales assistant. In 1966 she decided she wanted to work at an agency called "Ted Bates" and was offered a job as an assistant spot TV buyer. Anna Mae thrived in media department work and rose through the ranks.
In 1973, Anna Mae resigned from "Ted Bates" and married Bob Jones. Six months later she returned to agency media work and rose to Vice President, Associate Media Director.
In 1979 she enrolled in Iona College, graduating in 1983, summa cum laude, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. She enrolled in the Columbia University School of Social Work where she graduated in 1986 with a Master's of Science in Social Work.
She and Bob moved to Asheville in 2003 where they became members of the St. Eugene Parish. In addition to serving the church as a lector and reader, Anna Mae also restarted St. Eugene's parish library in 2003 as well as an ESL program about six years ago. Mrs. Jones also served several years on the Liturgy Planning Committee and the Latino Advocacy Committee.
Surviving are her husband of 40 years, Robert W. Jones; daughter, Patricia A. Byrnes and husband Stephen; granddaughter, Elizabeth Nelson and husband Chris; grandsons, Stephen Byrnes, Jr. and wife Simrit, James Byrnes, and Michael Byrnes; great grandson, Brandon Nelson and brother-in-law Lawrence M. Jones and wife Patricia.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, January 17, 2014 in St. Eugene Catholic Church, with Father Patrick Cahill and Father David Reilly officiating.
The family will receive friends Thursday, January 16, 2014 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville.
