BERNICE HARWOOD COATES WEAVERVILLE - Bernice Harwood Coates, age 83 of Sugar Cove Road died Sunday, May 31, 2015. Mrs. Coates was born October 29, 1931 in Buncombe County to the late Harcus and Esta Burrell Harwood. She was a longtime faithful member of Brown's Chapel Baptist Church serving as a Sunday school teacher, Bible school director and soloist. She also had a faithful heart for the mission field. Surviving are her husband of 67 years James "Eugene" Coates; sons, Dennis Coates and wife Doris, Gary Coates and wife Libby; grandchildren, Greg Coates, Scott Coates, Amber Holritz, Brian Coates, and Khrista Quinn. Her funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 3, 2015, in Brown's Chapel Baptist Church, 932 Reems Creek Rd., Weaverville, with Reverends Phillip Wilson, Gary Coates and Brian Coates officiating. Burial will be in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., Wednesday at the church prior to the service. West Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. At other times, the family will be at the residence. Flowers are acceptable and appreciated.
