BILL HOWARD HAWKINS LEICESTER -Bill Howard Hawkins, age 80, died Sunday, April 27, 2014. Bill was born August 5, 1933 to the late Raymond and Betsy Alexander Hawkins in Buncombe County where he lived all of his life. He retired from NCDOT in 1996 after 25+ years of service. He was an avid gardener and farmer. In addition, he was a veteran serving in the US Army and stationed in Italy. Mr. Hawkins was a member of Cedar Hill Baptist Church and served on the building committee. Bill's faith in God, kindness and pure heart touched everyone who knew him. He truly never met a stranger and had a heartfelt desire to assist neighbors, family and friends in any way possible. Well known for his humor and wit, a conversation with him was never without a humorous quote up until his last days. Husband of 53 years to the late Marie Hunter Hawkins who died in 2010, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Reeves Hawkins and sister, Shirley Hawkins. Surviving are his daughter, Annette Hawkins Buckner and husband Dewayne; son, Alan Hawkins and wife Angie; sister, Katherine Banks and husband Charles; brother, Ted Hawkins and wife Betty; grandchildren, Heather, Nathan and wife Jessica, Brad, Sarah and husband Logan and a host of nieces and nephews. His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 30, 2014 in Cedar Hill Baptist Church with Revs. Roy McPeters and Harold Rash officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave, Weaverville. Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Cedar Hill Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 474 Cedar Hill Rd., Alexander, NC 28701.
