BRENDA BROOKS SHETLEY

Brenda was born in Liberty, SC on June 18, 1940 and raised in Travelers Rest, SC. She has resided in Weaverville since 1976. Brenda was an educator with Buncombe County Schools and spent the majority of her career as the librarian at Weaverville Primary. As a young adult, she was very service-oriented as a member of Beta Sigma Phi and Junior Chamber International (Jaycees and Jaycettes). Brenda and her husband, William Gary Shetley (Bill), also served on the board of directors for the March of Dimes, an organization close to both their hearts.
After retiring from Buncombe Co. Schools, Brenda founded a successful tour company called Southern Comfort Tours and worked as a part-time media coordinator at Fairview Elementary. Brenda was an adventurous spirit, traveling all over the world, even taking her two grandsons to the N.C. Zoo one week before passing. She was an avid reader, a huge Elvis fan, and a lover of all holidays, especially Christmas.
The loves of Brenda’s life were her beloved husband of 53 years, Bill; daughters, Savannah Shetley Marks of Alexandria, VA and Susanna Shetley Barbee of Waynesville, NC; and grandchildren, Katherine Ray Marks, 10, Brooks William Barbee, 7, Case Allen Barbee 4, and Madeline Tate Marks, 14 months. Brenda is also survived by her dear sons-in-law, Gregory Tate Marks and Todd Delane Barbee. Family was paramount to her, and she will be missed beyond words.
Brenda was preceded in death by her mother, Wilma Willimon Brooks and father, Clifton Matthew Brooks.
Brenda fought a courageous battle before succumbing to complications related to cancer. Her family would like to thank the oncology team and staff at Cancer Care of WNC as well as the doctors and nurses in the Critical Care Unit of Mission Hospital who made her final days so very comfortable.
As was Brenda’s desire, there will be no formal funeral services. She requested a small family ceremony held in her memory.
