Carson Howard Harris, born September 15, 1924, age 90, of Lake Panasoffkee, Florida passed away Friday, September 11, 2015 in the loving care of the Elizabeth House, Flat Rock, NC.
The "Mayor" as he was known to his neighbors at the Lake was a lifelong fisherman, and a proud great grandfather. He served his country bravely as a destroyer engineman for the US Navy at Anzio Beach, Italy, in the Pacific in Okinawa in WWII and in Korea. He also served his country during the Cuban Missile crisis and spent a year in Saudi Arabia. He married his childhood sweetheart in 1963 and they built their dream fishing home at Lake Panasoffkee in 1984. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie S Harris, his mother Mattie Harris, and all of his brothers and sisters.
He is survived by one daughter, Susie Wheelis, of Asheville, NC, two grand-daughters Erin (Brandon) Greene of Weaverville, NC and Callie (Jon) Davis of Asheville, NC. He was able to get to know his great-grandchildren - Jacob and Sadie Greene and Riley and Carson Davis - in the last few weeks of his life.
The family wants to express their sincere appreciation for the kind and thoughtful care provided by the Four Seasons hospice staff, both in the home and in the Elizabeth House. Without their help, we wouldn't have been able to give Dad a peaceful transition. In lieu of flowers, he requested that contributions be made to the hospice of your choice and if possible to Four Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care, 571 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731.
A military Service of Honor will be held at the Florida National Cemetery on Friday, October 2, 2015 at 10 am. The family will receive friends at the home immediately following the service from 11:30-2:00.
