CHRISTIANE BROWN
ASHEVILLE -Christiane Brown, 99 of Asheville, passed away peacefully at her home on December 20th 2013.
She is survived by her four children Edie Schneider of Asheville, Claudia Lozier of Johnstown, NY, Edward Woods of Asheville, and Antoinette Sanders of Asheville. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
Christiane's life spanned one of the most interesting centuries in history. She was born in Paris, France in 1914 at the start of World War I, and later married Rene Binoche. During World War II, she raised two daughters and cared for her mother and two brothers. Living in Paris under German occupation, Christiane was active in the French resistance and worked for the Red Cross.
She married George Woods, an army officer, in Paris after the war. She and her family moved to the United States in 1948. Her love of caring for others continued in the form of volunteering in army hospitals. In 1961, she and Colonel Woods settled in Millbrook, NY where they continued to raise their four children until his death.
In 1980, Christiane moved to Tampa Florida where she and her husband Ted Brown, became active volunteers with Hospice for 15 years. She was a devout Catholic and was active in her parish.
In her later years, Christiane took great pleasure in jewelry making. She freely gave away her beading creations to her many visitors. She met with friends weekly to play Scrabble and delighted in finding words that would stump her opponents.
A Memorial Service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 20, 2014 at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Mars Hill. In lieu of flowers, it was Christiane's wish that donations be made to Hospice.
