MARSHALL—Claudia Green (née Claudia Marie Fox) passed away peacefully at home on April 21, 2024.
Claudia was born in the home of her parents, Gennie Allen Fox and Claude Fox, on March 9, 1934, on Hunter Branch in Marshall. She married Joe Green on December 20, 1957. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Joe Green (August 20, 2023), and by 11 brothers and sisters, of whom she was the 9th: Richard Fox (Eloise), Glenna Rice (Howard), Carl Fox (Patsy), Madge Arrowood (Charlie), Juanita Ball (Walter), Harriet Clark (Isaac), Gennie Alice (died in infancy), Louise Cantrell (Clayton), Wade Fox (Lela), Paul Fox (Charlotte), and Minnie Haney (C. S.).
Claudia is survived by sons: Joe Keith Green (Mark Starr), George Marq Green, and Matthew Allen Green, and niece Kate Welch Martin, who lived with the family for a time, and by many other nieces and nephews in the Fox and Green families.
Claudia’s family will receive friends at West Funeral Home in Weaverville, NC on Saturday, 27 April, 2024, from 1:15-2:15pm and her funeral will follow at 2:30pm. Burial in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Marshall, NC will follow. Her family will be assisted in conducting her funeral and committal by Rev. Ray Baily and Rev. Bob Belford, of GracePoint-Woodland Hills--the former Woodland Hills Baptist Church--of which Claudia and Joe were longstanding members. Throughout their lives, Claudia and Joe have been faithful and active members of their church family, and were both Sunday school teachers for much of their lives.
Claudia was 2nd in her high school class (salutatorian) at Marshall High School in 1952; and she remained engaged with other members of her high school class throughout much of her subsequent life. She attended Mars Hill College and Western Carolina University, graduating in 1954 and 1956. She entered the teaching profession, teaching in Asheville City Schools, Jefferson County Schools (Tennessee), Haywood County Schools (Bethel School in Canton, NC), and Buncombe County Schools (West Buncombe and Emma Elementary Schools) over the course of her career. Following her retirement from teaching, Claudia guided school tours on the Biltmore Estate for several years. She remained an active supporter of education and learning at all levels throughout her life.
Throughout her life, Claudia’s true loves were her family and extending its hospitality to embrace others. Over the course of her marriage, of 65 years, to Joe, they opened their home to a niece, Kate Welch Martin, and to Mae Thomas Levy, who provided care to Claudia as she underwent chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer. Claudia deeply valued education and learning, and supported others who devoted their lives to teaching and other caring professions.
Condolences may be offered to the family under Mrs. Green’s obituary at www.WestFamilyFuneralServices.com for those who are otherwise unable to be with the family at this time. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Claudia’s memory to the patient assistance fund at Madison Home Care and Hospice (send to 590 Medical Park Drive, Marshall, NC 28753. The hospice is a service of the Hot Springs Health Program in Madison County, NC), or to the PAGE Program—Partnership for Appalachian Girls’ Education, an educational non-profit in Madison County that aims to create new ladders of educational opportunity (including better access to higher education) for young women in junior high, and high school. https://pageprograms.com/.
