WEAVERVILLE—David Conrad Ward, age 87, of 424 Kyfields, died Wednesday, July 18, 2012. Mr. Ward was born August 27, 1924, in Buncombe County where he had lived all of his life. He was a veteran of the US Army during World War II in the 28th Portable Unit Surgical Hospital serving in the China, Burma, India Theater. After his military service he worked in construction until his retirement. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church since 1950 where he served as Elder for a number of years and was currently an Elder Emeritus. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Victor and Julia Mae Taylor Ward; his wife, Glenna Bridges Ward who died in 2007; siblings, J. Hilliard Ward, Evelyn Smith, Lois Hyatt, and infant Dennis Michael Ward. Surviving are his son, Michael Ward and wife Mary of Weaverville; daughter, Patty Goodwin and husband Bob of Selma; brother, Donald Ward of Asheville; grandchildren, Bryan Ward and wife Jennifer, Tricia Melton, David Goodwin, and Robert Goodwin; and great grandchildren, Mona Grace Melton and Jackson Carter Ward. His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 21, 2012, in First Presbyterian Church, Weaverville, with Revs. Clark Henderson and Al Harrell officiating. Burial will be in West Memorial Park with military rites provided by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Volunteer Memorial Team. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville, where the body will remain until placed in the church one hour prior to the service. At other times, the family will be at the home of Mike and Mary Ward, 123 Highland St., Weaverville. Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Beth Anderson Family Center of Newbridge Baptist Church, 199 Elkwood Ave., Asheville, NC 28804, or First Baptist Church, Senior Meal Center, PO Box 547, Weaverville, NC 28787.
