ASHEVILLE - Doris Garrison Van Arsdale, 86, of Asheville, was carried away by the angels on August 24, 2023.
Doris was born in Rock Hill, SC, and spent her childhood in Greer, SC. She studied at Limestone College and was a career banker. Doris was dedicated to her many customers at the Wachovia/Wells Fargo branch in Biltmore, from which she retired as a Personal Banker.
Doris was an avid bridge player, gardener, and Anglophile, among her many interests, and never missed a Clemson football game. She was a card-carrying member of the Delbert McClinton fan club and loved R&B and blues music. Doris could do a mean Carolina shag!
Her heart was tender, and she was known to take in many strays, especially cats and assorted neighborhood children. She always found a way to help someone in need.
Doris was devoted to her family and thought her children were her greatest accomplishment in life.She is survived by her children, Lauren Van Arsdale Wall and husband Warren Wall of Fairview, NC, Billy Van Arsdale of Palm Coast, FL, and Valerie Van Arsdale Shrader of Asheville, NC; grandchildren, Jessica Van Arsdale Henson and husband Cody Henson and Miranda Van Arsdale Stevens, all of Hendersonville, NC, Dylan Shrader of Weaverville, NC, and Jeremy and wife Bridget Shrader of Greensboro, NC; great-grandchildren, Baby Boy Henson due in February, Jaycie Raye Stevens, and Stevie and Asa Shrader. She had two nieces, Margaret Wright and Beth Blackstock, and one nephew, Ray Williams.
Doris also doted on her step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Justin and wife Laura Wall;Sarah and husband Pat Bradshaw and Isabella, Ophelia, and Jasmine; and Hailee Green.
This family is grateful for the care she received from her longtime caretaker, Dorothy Brown, and later Berna and Dianne at Aston Park Health Care Center. Memorial gifts can be sent to Four Seasons Hospice, which provided compassionate care to Doris in her final weeks.
A celebratory service will be held at 2:30pm on Sunday, September 24, at the outdoor pavilion at Covenant Community Church, 11 Rocket Drive, Asheville, NC 28803.
