EDITH METCALF BRYAN ASHEVILLE – Edith Louise Elizabeth Metcalf Bryan, native and life-long resident of Buncombe County, went home to be with Jesus, March 25, 2016 after a lengthy illness. She was the daughter of the late Effie Whittemore Metcalf and Francis Hugh Metcalf of Barnardsville. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by brothers, Morris Howard Metcalf, Gordon Bryant Metcalf, Francis John Metcalf, and sister Nell Imogene Metcalf Edwards. She is survived by her children Lewis Fowler Bryan, II and wife Denise, Ted Metcalf Bryan and wife Cindy, Adolphus Gordon Bryan and wife Ginger, Virginia Bryan Rhyne and husband Don and her grandchildren Lewellyn Faith Bryan, Carson Ramer Rhyne and Christine Rosemarion Rhyne. She is also survived by one sister JoAnn Lavada Rice and husband Jimmy, one brother Eugene Delano Metcalf and wife Linda both of Barnardsville. Additionally, Mrs. Bryan is survived by sister-in-law Imogene Metcalf of Asheville; brother-in-law Bobby Edwards of Marshall; and numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. She was noted for her selfless devotion to her children, family, students and friends. Mrs. Bryan graduated from Barnardsville High School, Asheville-Biltmore College, Appalachian State Teachers College and Women’s College of Greensboro where she earned her Master’s Degree in Education. She was an honorary life member of American Association of University Women and a member of Young Democrat’s Committee. Mrs. Bryan treasured her over- fifty-years career as an educator with the North Carolina Public School system, primarily in Buncombe County. She proudly maintained her teaching credentials through continuing education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A service to celebrate Mrs. Bryan’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday March 30, 2016 in the Chapel of West Funeral Home with Reverend Donald R. Rhyne officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Asheville. The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 29th at the funeral home. All are welcome to attend.
