Elaine Mary (Bransfield) Smith

Elaine Mary (Bransfield) Smith (age 87), of Weaverville NC (formerly of East Hampton, CT) passed to the next life on July 23, 2024. Born in East Hampton, CT on June 25, 1937, she was the only child of Harold Bransfield and Nora (Cavanaugh) Bransfield, both of whom predecease her. 

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, E. David Smith and her five children, Michael Smith (husband Steven), Peter Smith, Geoffrey Smith, Maggie Smith and Stephen Smith (wife Monica), and her four grandchildren, Kelsey McGillivray (husband Scott), Brendan Smith, Nora Smith and Annie Smith. 

Elaine earned her Bachelors of Arts degree in English from Seton Hill University, a Master’s in Reading Education from Longwood University. 

She was an Adjunct in reading at Carroll Community College in Maryland, where she also developed a workplace literacy program funded by the U.S. Department of Labor. In Asheville, she tutored at Hillcrest Enrichment Center and Isaac Dickson Elementary School and was a tutor trainer for the Education Coalition. As a communicant of St. Eugene Church, she was a lector and served on several outreach committees. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saint Eugene Catholic Church, located at 72 Culvern St, Asheville, NC 28804, on Monday, July 29, 2024, at 11:00am. Interment will be at St. Patrick Cemetery in East Hampton, CT at the convenience of the family.
