CHARLOTTE/FLETCHER - Eleanor Spittle Yates, age 94, formerly of Charlotte, died Tuesday, December 22, 2009, at Flesher's Fairview Healthcare Center.
Mrs. Yates was born December 18, 1915, in Mt. Holly and was a resident of Charlotte most of her life. She was educated at Mt. Holly School and Wake Forest University with an English major. She was a member of Myers Park Baptist Church. As a young woman she taught Sunday school at her church for many years. Her interests included reading, travel and gardening. During World War II she joined the American Red Cross and served overseas in England and France, after which she moved to Hawaii and met her husband, Alfred J. Yates who died on October 31, 1998. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Edgar Neely and Lottie Ballard Spittle.
Surviving are her daughter, Susan Yates of Arden; brother, Perry Reed Spittle of Mt. Holly; and sister-in-law, Rose Spittle of Weaverville.

When asked how she would like to be remembered, Mrs. Yates' reply was, "As someone who gentled the breeze."
