Frances Marie Moore Penland

ASHEVILLE – Frances Marie Moore Penland, 100, died peacefully April 12, 2023, at the WNC Baptist Home.

Marie was born July 30^th, 1922, in Joe, NC to the late William Jess and Cordia Parks Moore.

She married Jack H. Penland December 10^th, 1938 and they enjoyed 72 years of marriage until Jack’s death on December 21^st, 2010. 

She was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and sister.  She was a long-time dedicated member of Woodfin Baptist Church.  Until moving to the Baptist Home in 2019, she was the oldest active member of the church.  She also spent 16 years as a volunteer at Memorial Mission Hospital.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by brothers, John Moore, Doug Moore and Grover Moore.

Left to cherish her memory are sons, Jackie Penland and wife Sue of  Woodfin and Johnny Penland and wife Nadean of Marion; sisters Marilee Moore of Hot Springs and Wanda Donehower of Asheville and sister-in-law Martha Ann Moore of Black Mountain; grandchildren, Karen Ferrell and husband Mark of Weaverville, David Penland and wife Devika of Asheville and Betsy Burleson and husband Gregg of Marion; step grandchildren Rod Williams (Brittany) and Carrie Goodman of Marion; great grandchildren Heather Call and husband Justin of Colorado, Jordan Ferrell and fiancée Rachel Hawkins of Greenville, NC, Jaya Penland and Jackson Penland of Asheville; step great grandchildren, Lindsay Healy (Rachael) of Forest City and Kirsten Williams of Marion; great great grandchildren, Wyatt Call and Zoe Call of Colorado.  She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, April 15, 2023 in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville with Rev. Tommy Crowe and Rev. J.D. Gipe officiating. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory, 901 Aiken Road, Asheville. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

The Penland family would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff and caregivers and Doctors Glance and Bates at the WNC Baptist Home and to Abbie from Four Seasons Hospice.   Also, to Dr. Treakle and Dr. Magnata and the nurses at Asheville Family Medicine for their many years of caring for Mother.
