WEAVERVILLE—Frances Elizabeth Ray Canter, age 76, of Ballard Rd., died Friday, September 9, 2011. Mrs. Canter was born July 22, 1935, in Madison County and was a resident of Buncombe County for most of her life. She taught for 34 years including 25 years as a first grade teacher at Weaverville Primary. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi. Mrs. Canter was a member of Brittain's Cove Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir. She was a daughter of the late Oliver and Ola Hunter Ray. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Jay Canter who died in 2004. Surviving are her sons, Mark Canter and wife Brenda of Asheville, Stewart Canter and wife Gina of Barnardsville, and Kelly Canter of St. Paul, Minn.; sister, Judith Ricker of Mars Hill; and grandchildren, Christopher and William. Her memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 17, 2011, in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, with Rev. George Hutchins officiating. Burial will be in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. The family will greet friends following the memorial service. For those attending the service, please note that Main Street, Weaverville, will be closed for Art in Autumn. Please use Exit 21 (New Stock Road) off of 19/23 as an alternate route to the funeral home.
