Geneva Ammons Maney

WOODFIN—Geneva Ammons Maney, age 80, of 31 Skyland Circle, died Monday, October 3, 2011. Mrs. Maney was born December 25, 1930, in Madison County and was a resident of Buncombe County for most of her life. She began her teaching career at the age of 19. She taught math for 47 years at North Buncombe High School and taught at Mars Hill College and AB Tech for over 25 years. During her teaching career she won numerous awards, the most significant being the W.W. Rankin Memorial Award, the highest award given to a math teacher in the state by the North Carolina Council of Math Teachers. She loved teaching and each of her students was special to her. She served as treasurer of Woodfin Fire Department for many years. She was currently vice-mayor of Woodfin, a community that she dearly loved. She was an active member of Beech Glen Baptist Church for 60 years, where she taught Sunday school and was a former choir director. She was a daughter of the late Woodson and Alma Williams Ammons. She was married for 51 years to the late John Brigman Maney who died in 2000. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Rachel Roberts and Dorothy Sue Ammons. Surviving are her daughter, Jennifer Garrison and husband Philip of Mars Hill; sons, Lewis Franklin Maney and wife Corazon of Nairobi, Kenya, and Randal Kirk Maney of Chapel Hill; brothers, Woody Ammons and wife Joyce of Mars Hill, Roy Ammons and wife Betty of Mars Hill, Lawrence Ammons and wife Rosemary of Newport, Tenn., and Judd Ammons and wife Jo Ellen of Raleigh; grandchildren, John Thomas Garrison, Chandler Garrison, and Matthew Garrison; and nephew, Chris Maney and wife Jane and their daughter, Carrie. Her funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, October 9, 2011, in Beech Glen Baptist Church, with Revs. Gordon Benton, Stanley Peek, Troy Rogers, and Mike Woodard officiating. Burial will be in Brigmon-McPeters Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Saturday at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville, where the body will remain until placed in the church one hour prior to the service.
