BARNARDSVILLE– George Woodson Harris, age 93, of Poverty Branch Road, joined our Lord in Heaven on Monday, September 24, 2018.
George was born January 26, 1925 in Barnardsville, NC to the late Doctor Hilliard and Sue Ella Burleson Harris. He was a proud veteran who served his country with the 612th Tank Destroyer Battalion during WWII. After serving his country, he returned to his hometown and ran a successful farm with his beloved wife, Velma. George was a devout Baptist and member of Barnardsville Baptist Church formerly serving as a deacon. He adored his grandchildren, and was actively involved in his community, well into what should have been his retirement years. He will be missed by all who knew him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Jo, and brothers, Charles, Tom, Willard and Johnny.
Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Velma Mundy Harris; brother, Robert Harris and wife Jeanette; daughter, Judy Carson and husband Stephen; son, Steve Harris and wife Nancy all of Barnardsville, NC; grandchildren, Tina McBee and husband Shannon of Hundred, WV Charlie Carson and wife Darian of Bellevue, WA, Kendal Harris and Kevil Harris both of Barnardsville, NC; great-grandchildren, Cody Baker and wife Sami of Billings MT, Mollie Baker and husband Clay of Paden City, WV, Amy Baker of Barnardsville, NC, Carson Moore and husband Logan of Gulfport, MS, and Martin Baker of Hundred, WV; great-great grandchildren, Piper, Madilyn, and Abigail.
His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 27, 2018 in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville. Reverend Joseph Willis will officiate. Burial will follow in West Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at the funeral home.
