WEAVERVILLE - Harold A. Sluder, age 93, of Dula Springs Road died Sunday, May 25, 2014. Mr. Sluder was born January 9, 1921 in Buncombe County to the late James Ervin Sluder and Ethel Roberts Sluder. A graduate of Weaverville High School, he also attended Blanton's Business College and Asheville Biltmore College. Harold retired in 1979, after 36 years as a U.S. Federal Service Employee, having worked in Postal Accounts and Air Weather Service. During World War II he served in the U.S. Coast Guard. A life-long member of Brittain's Cove Presbyterian Church, he had served as Treasurer for 60 years and an Elder since he was 28 years of age. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Leonard and Charles Sluder. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Mary Sue Morris Sluder; daughters, Sandra Tweed and husband Jim of Weaverville, Karen Wing and husband Bill of Abingdon, VA and Myra Broadway and husband Dante also of Weaverville; sister, Nellene S. West and brother, Joe Sluder both of Weaverville; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. His funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 in Brittain's Cove Presbyterian Church with Rev. George Hutchins officiating. Burial will be in the Veteran's Section at West Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville where the body will remain until placed in the church one hour prior to the service. At other times the family will be at the residence. Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Brittain's Cove Presbyterian Church, PO Box 1590, Weaverville, NC 28787.
