OAK ISLAND—Mrs. Hazel Crouch Hyer, age 88, passed away on December 10, 2012, at Hospice Care and Life Center in Brunswick County with her loving family by her side. Hazel "Haze" Crouch Hyer was born in Gastonia on March 7, 1924. Hazel was the daughter of the late Amos Crouch and Pearle Crouch. Surviving are her daughter, Rebecca Deweese of South Port; and son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Debra Hyer of Whiteville. In addition, surviving are six grandchildren, Wayne Hyer of South Port, Tammy Heath of Candler, Rick Deweese of Myrtle Beach, Glenda Hyer of Candler, Amy Little of Calabash, and Justin Hyer of South Port; seven great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren. Also surviving are her brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Betty Crouch of Asheville; sister and brother-in-law, Russell and Earline Young of Brevard; and several other extended family members and friends. In addition to her parents, Hazel was preceded in death by her loving husband, Glenn A. Hyer (Papaw), formerly of South Port. Hazel C. Hyer was a strong, dedicated and caring person who loved our Lord and Savior with all her heart. She loved her family dearly and will be missed by those that knew her. Funeral services will be led by Rev. Charlie Carter of First Baptist Church of Oak Island, Oak Island, NC, at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville, on Friday, December 14, 2012, at 2:30 p.m. Burial will follow at West Memorial Park. Family and friends are invited to the receiving of friends, which will be held one hour prior to the service.
