WEAVERVILLE—Helen Cantrell Shelton, age 89, of Weaverville, died Monday, April 18, 2011.
Mrs. Shelton was born June 16, 1921, in Madison County and was a resident of Buncombe County for most of her life. She was an avid quilter and member of the Red Hat Society. Her life revolved around family and faith. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur E. and Mattie Letterman Cantrell; husband, Pete S. Shelton who died in 1970; sisters, Hazel Stockton, Ruth Stockton and Pearl Roberts.
Surviving are her daughter, Joann Shelton of Asheville; sons, Toby P. Shelton and his wife Susie of Spruce Pine, and Robin Arthur Shelton of North Yorkshire, England, and his wife Terri of Minnesota; grandchildren, Angela, Jodi, Jeremy, Katie, Kim, and Emily; and great grandchildren, Hannah, Madison, Jonathan, and Julianna.
Her funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, April 21, 2011, in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville, with Revs. Naomi King and Randy Bonner officiating. Burial will be in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Thursday, prior to the funeral service at the funeral home.
At other times, the family will be at the home of Toby Shelton, 490 Hickory Hill Dr., Spruce Pine.
