WEAVERVILLE—Henry "Hink" Lowrance Ausband, age 87, of Weaverville, died on Wednesday, October 27, 2010, of Alzheimer's disease at the Keever Solace Center.
Henry was born in Winston-Salem on May 20, 1923. His parents were the former Estelle Crowell and Charles Clarence Ausband. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Margaret Diane Ausband; and siblings, Frank Crowell Ausband of Kernersville, Mary Barbara Hutchinson Hamm of Winston-Salem, and Ruth Estelle Ausband Hill of Denton.
Henry Ausband is survived by his spouse of 42 years, the former Betty Ann Creasman of Swannanoa, and two sons, Henry Lowrance Ausband, Jr., of Madison County and Dr. Francis Bryant Ausband of Dare County. The mother of his children was his first wife, the former Frances Eleanor Bryant of Fletcher, deceased. He is survived by four brothers: Dr. John Rufus Ausband of Beaufort, SC; Dr. Samuel Palmer Ausband of Winston-Salem; David Wesley Ausband of Dunwoody, GA; and Robert William Ausband of Gainesville, FL; and one sister, Ann Ausband Harmon of Richmond, VA. Henry is also survived by four grandchildren: Steven Scott Ausband, Christina Lynne Ausband Hinton, Thad Yelton Ausband, and Joseph Bryant Ausband, as well as five step grandchildren, Alexander Reid LeFevre, Julee Morrison, Lauralee Saad, Josh Meeks, and Natalie Meeks. His great grandchildren are Laurel Christine Hinton, Zachary Charles Hinton, Tyler Chase Hinton, Gavin Tunis Ausband, and Ruby Kathryn Ausband. Henry Ausband was a loving father and husband who is also survived by 29 nieces and nephews.
He graduated from Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem and attended Guilford College before joining the US Navy where he became a naval aviator flying TBMs, SBDs and F6Fs in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Henry loved flying and was a private licensed pilot most of his life. Henry retired from a long career as a manufacturer's representative for Eddie Clasz Company.
Henry and his wife, Betty, were active members of First Presbyterian Church in Weaverville where Henry served as a deacon. He enjoyed golf and was a member of Asheville Country Club for many years.
His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 29, 2010, in First Presbyterian Church of Weaverville, with Rev. Skip Gillikin and Rev. Al Harrell officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville.
At other times, the family will be at the residence.
