WEAVERVILLE—Jacqueline M. \"Jackie\" (Carrier) Governo, 50, of Weaverville, N.C., formerly of Fall River, Mass., and Florence, S.C., died on April 4, 2013, at The John F. Keever Solace Center in Asheville, N.C., after a valiant battle with cancer. She was the wife of Dr. Scott Governo.
Born in Fall River, Mass., a daughter of Helen Carrier and the late Joseph \"Pete\" Carrier of Fall River, Mass., she lived in Fall River until 1991, then lived in South Carolina briefly before settling in Weaverville, N.C.
Mrs. Governo was a teacher assistant in the Fall River, Mass., school department. She was a founding member of the Healthy Steps Program in Florence, S.C. She worked as a special education teacher for the Oasis program at Buncombe County Woodfin Elementary School until 2009, then she taught special education as well in Asheville City schools until 2010. She was also a substitute teacher in the Buncombe, N.C., school system.
She was a 1989 graduate of Bristol Community College, and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Lesley College in 1991, before earning her Master's degree in early childhood education from Francis Marion College in 2002.
She loved her family, art, playing games on her Kindle, and was considered a mother to many of her children's friends.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Brandon and Cory Governo of Asheville, N.C., and considered Zane Warriner of Woodfin, N.C. as one of her sons; two sisters, Brigette (Carrier) Delisle and her husband Stephen of Tiverton, R.I., and Traci (Carrier) Soares and her husband Jeffrey, of Fall River, Mass. She had seven nephews and two nieces, and four great-nieces and one great-nephew.
Her funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 9, 2013, in the Basilica of St. Lawrence, 97 Haywood St., Asheville, N.C., with Rev. C. Morris Boyd officiating.
The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a memorial fund to assist in the training of special education teachers for children with disabilities, to be established at a future date.
