WEAVERVILLE - James Albert "Slick" Holden, age 86, of 204 Hamburg Mtn. Road, died Thursday, June 19, 2014.
Mr. Holden was born August 4, 1927 in Buncombe County where he had lived all of his life. He retired from Southern-Bell as a lineman after 30+ years and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in World War II. He was a long time member and deacon of Elk Mountain Baptist Church. He was the son of the late James Calvin and Cora Mae Hensley Holden. Also preceding him in death were his sisters, Lela Roberts, and Carrie Roberts; and brother, Daniel Holden.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Leta Joe Buckner Holden; daughters, Diane Jones and husband Freddie of Asheville, Sherri Holdredge and husband Paul of Weaverville, Anita Freese and husband Shaun of Asheville, and Paula Nunnaley of the home; son, David Holden of Asheville; and grandchildren, Chris, April, Jessica, Dawson, and Gavin.
His graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 23, 2014, at Pisgah View Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Saturday, June 21, 2014 at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville.
At other times, the family will be at the residence.
