WEAVERVILLE– Rev. James Robert “J.R.” Plemmons, age 91, of Weaverville, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Sunday, November 11, 2018. J.R. was born May 30, 1927 in Madison County to the late Farida and Viola Haney Plemmons; he was a resident of Buncombe County since 1940. He was a barber since the age of 21, and a Baptist pastor in Buncombe and Madison Counties for over 63 years. A veteran of World War II, he served in the US Navy. J.R. was a member of Upper Walnut Creek Baptist Church. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Gail Plemmons Hall; brothers, Wiley, W.O., Blaine and Calvin Plemmons; sisters, Elsie Culbertson and Lillian Matthews. Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Mildred Parker Plemmons (on December 25, they would have celebrated 72 years of marriage); daughter, Pat Plemmons Pressley and husband Richard of Weaverville; son, Wayne Plemmons and wife Joyce of Weaverville; son-in-law, Ronnie Hall of Florida; sisters, Helen Riddle and Joy Radford and husband Ben; brothers, Dean Plemmons and wife Sue, and David Plemmons and wife Ursula; seven grandchildren, Richard Pressley, Jr and wife Kelly, Jan Braxton and husband Steve, Rodney Pressley, Roger Pressley and wife Kellie, Renee’ Shelton and husband Davy, Taryn Ribblett and husband Phillip, Jason Hall and wife Laura; eighteen great-grandchildren, Rodney Pressley, Jr. and wife Heather, Austin Braxton and wife Kaity, Hayden Braxton, Logan Pressley, Katelyn Shelton, Dylan Pressley and wife Rebecca, Brittany Parker and husband Nathan, Dakota Pressley, Elijah Shelton, Meredith Braxton, Riley Pressley, Conor Pressley, Brooke Pressley, Reid Pressley, Chloe Shelton, Jane Ribblett, Sofie Ribblett, Ayla Hall; and two great-great grandchildren, Parker Braxton and Easton Pressley. His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 16, 2018 in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville. Reverends Don Burchette and Roger Crawford will officiate. Burial will follow in the Veterans section of West Memorial Park with Reverend Roger Massey officiating. The family requests all pastors who attend the graveside, stand together and have the Lord’s Prayer. The family will receive friends 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, November 15, 2018 at the funeral home. Flowers are welcome or consider making a contribution to a church of your choice. The family would like to thank the staff of Charles George VA Medical Center and The Valor Hospice Staff.
