JAMES HERBERT REID, JR.
WEAVERVILLE - James Herbert Reid, Jr, preferred to be known as J. Herbert Reid or, better yet, Herb for short. Herb, age 92, passed peacefully on the afternoon of Wednesday, November 25, 2015 after a significant battle with lung cancer.
He was one of our last few treasures from World War II as well as serving in Korea and Vietnam. During his 30 years of service Herb received numerous Commendations, Medals, Citations and Badges too lengthy to list. He was humble, but we were proud.
As a Retired Marine Colonel he enjoyed raising hundreds of orchids, roto-tilling and planting his garden, growing flowers, vegetables and apples. All of which he sold as one of the original tailgate market vendors, but most of all he loved football. His favorite team was Duke, his alma mater.
Herb was always there to help when one of his family members needed him. He was a beloved and dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Surviving are his wife, Peggy Thomas Reid; daughter Teri Thomas Allstaedt and husband Steven of Asheville; sons, Herb Reid, III and wife Ann of Orlando, Russell Thomas and wife Linda Stills of Fairview, Landon Thomas and wife Rosa of Orlando; eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed and mourned.
The family greatly appreciated the brilliance of Raymond Thertulian, MD, the hard work and dedication of Kenneth Shaw and compassionate care received from the Care Partner's Hospice Team.
His service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, December 1, 2015, in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville, with Reverend Wesley Pike officiating. Burial will be close to the waterfall in West Memorial Park with military honors.
The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday at the funeral home.
Respectfully, requesting memorial donations to Care Partners Hospice, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.
