Jean Shope Kennett Haynes, age 90, of Asheville passed away Friday, December 23, 2022. She was born July 14, 1932, to the late William W. and Rachel Daniel Shope. Jean grew up in Weaverville, attended Weaverville schools, and graduated from St. Genevieve of the Pines. She graduated with honors from Salem College in 1954, was listed in the Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities and was a member of the Order of the Scorpion. Jean raised her family in Greensboro, North Carolina before moving to Asheville in 1995. There she was an active volunteer with Care Partners Foundation, River Link and a member of First Presbyterian Church. She was a former member of Junior League and Town and Country Garden Club.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Stan Kennett; second husband, Harvey Haynes; brother, Bill Shope, Jr. and wife Gert; stepdaughter, Donna Haynes; and special cousin, Susie Pyron.
She is survived by her children, Jan Stafford (Bill), David Kennett (Annette), and Joanie Armour (Tom); twin sister, Joan Bennett (Mal); three granddaughters, Katie Stafford Carbone (Tommy), and Hannah and Reagan Armour; three great-grandchildren, Strayer and Sophie Carbone, and Cayden Carlisle; stepsons, Keith Haynes (Dorinda Bennett) and Scott Haynes; step-grandson, Gray Haynes; special god-daughters, Susan Willis and Sandra Hunter; and several nieces and nephews.
There will be a memorial service at First Presbyterian Church of Asheville at 2pm on Saturday, January 28, 2023 with Reverend Patrick Johnson officiating. A burial service will be held at the St. Francis Episcopal Church Memorial Garden in Greensboro, North Carolina at a later date. West Funeral Home is assisting the family.
