WEAVERVILLE—Joletha "Jo" Blackwell West, age 92, formerly of Weaverville, died Tuesday, September 21, 2010, in Advance, N.C.
Jo was born July 13, 1918, in Clarendon County, S.C., to the late Olie Rufus and Mary Emma Corbett Blackwell. She attended Woodfin High School, graduating in 1934. Upon graduation she entered Mr. Ard's Beauty School and became a hairdresser working at the Grove Arcade building. She opened a beauty shop in Weaverville and many of her customers followed her there. Jo was a member of Weaverville United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Matilda Dryman Circle. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, Edwin C. West, who died in 1972; daughter, Barbara White; and brother, Olie Earl Blackwell.
Surviving are her sister, Rosa Erlene Allison of Kinston; brothers, Julian Rufus "J.R." Blackwell of Woodfin and Burnice Eugene "Gene" Blackwell and wife Ruth of Arden; several nieces and nephews.
Her funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, September 25, 2010, in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville, with Rev. Beverly W. Colombo officiating. Burial will be in West Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
