WEAVERVILLE—Juanita West Proffitt, age 92 of Weaverville died Tuesday, August 28, 2012.
She was born October 3, 1919 in Buncombe County and was the daughter of the late Troy W. West, Sr. and Stella McDaris West and granddaughter of Dr. C.P. West and Effie Reynolds West. Juanita attended schools in Weaverville, was a member of the Drama, Home Economics, 4-H, and Glee Club while in high school. She was a graduate of Brevard Jr. College, East Tennessee State University with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics and a Master of Science in Technology with emphasis in home economics. At Georgia College she studied to be a specialist in methods of the microwave. She also was a member of the Past Presidents of North Carolina Federation of Home Demonstration Clubs. As President she attended the National Home Demonstration meeting in Ceylon.
Juanita was a member of the Weaverville United Methodist Church, the family being lifelong Methodists. She was a long time member of the Matilda Dryman Circle of the United Methodist Women. She was given a life membership in the Women's Society of Christian Service, Asheville District of the Western North Carolina Conference.
Juanita worked for MONY as a field underwriter and lived at Cane River in Yancey County prior to retirement. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Troy W. West, Jr. and husband, Ralph T. Proffitt.
She is survived by several cousins.
Mrs. Proffitt's funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, August 31, 2012 in Weaverville United Methodist Church with Rev. Linda Kelly officiating. Burial will be in West Memorial Park.
At Juanita's request family and friends will gather in the fellowship building of Weaverville United Methodist Church for cookies and punch following the interment.
