ASHEVILLE—Justus "Jud" Wayne DeLaney, 80, of Asheville, NC, peacefully passed on Saturday, October 20th into his Heavenly Father's arms along with waiting family and friends who have gone before him.
He was born on January 19, 1932 to the late Archie and Agnes Walker Delaney. Jud spent the early years of his life growing up working on his family's farm in the hills of Western Kentucky. As a young man he entered the U.S. Army and fought for his country during the Korean War. Upon returning home he began what resulted in a successful and lifelong pursuit of faith, family and friends. Jud also had a passion for building successful companies to fulfill his entrepreneurial spirit. From the late 1950's to the early 80's Jud built, operated and supplied full service car washes across the southeast. To minimize the time he was away from home and to fulfill his love for flying, he got his pilot's license (in one week). He sold his company in 1978 to retire (or so he thought), then went back to his roots to operate the first car wash he ever built in Asheville, NC. As his business interests again grew during retirement he became involved in the electronics and communications field.
A pioneer in the home TV shopping business, Jud helped form the new Shop At Home channel initially located in a strip mall just off of Interstate 40 in Newport, Tennessee. The original programs were taped in segments and mailed to origination studios to be played when time was available. In the beginning, it was similar in format to their larger national rivals QVC and the Home Shopping Network; however, in 1989 the network pioneered the sale of collectible coins, currency and high end jewelry. The success of these new and unique specialty shows allowed the network to set Shop At Home apart from its peers. By the early 90's Shop At Home was operating out of Knoxville, Tennessee and for the next eight years Jud had his own TV show selling watches and other fine jewelry all over the world. His simple, honest, friendly, and enduring charm earned him a large following across the country as well as other parts of the world. Jud transitioned his business online over the last few years and operated it until his passing. Jud has now joined his parents, Archie and Agnes Delaney, one sister, Laverne and one brother, Eldridge.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Clella DeLaney from Asheville; three sons, Terry and his wife Renee DeLaney from Knoxville, TN, Tim and his wife Diana DeLaney from Lilburn, GA and Gary DeLaney from Cumming, GA.; five grandchildren, Chris and his wife Erin DeLaney from Casper, WY, Courtney and her husband Matthew Stewart from Springdale, AR, Jordan, Josh and Amberlee DeLaney from Knoxville, TN.; great grandchildren include Titus and Mercy Stewart from Springdale, AR, and Octave DeLaney from Casper, WY. A brother, Jim DeLaney from Jackson, MI, and two sisters, Loretta Hamill and Elrita Monroe, both from Russell, AR along with many very special nieces and nephews.
Jud will be remembered for his love of family and friends, passion for flying, successfully completing that next business deal, but most of all for his love of Jesus and his Church.
A time of celebration will be held on Tuesday, October 23 beginning at 12:00 noon at Biltmore Baptist Church in Arden, with the funeral service at 2:00 PM. Interment will immediately follow at Upper Laurel Baptist Church Cemetery in Mars Hill, with military graveside rites conducted by the VFW Post # 5483, Mars Hill Memorial Team.
