KATHLEEN "KATHY" EDWARDS YOUNG
WEAVERVILLE - Kathleen "Kathy" Edwards Young, 83, of Weaverville, went to her Heavenly home on Friday, February 20, 2015.
A native of Madison County, Kathy lived in Weaverville since 1969. She served on the Weaverville Town Council from 1983 - 1987 and again from 1989 - 1997. She served under Mayors Dr. Lawrence Sprinkle, Reese Lasher, Lawrence "Larry" Sprinkle, Jr., and Mary "Bett" Stroud. Some of the highlights of Kathy's political career include turning Lake Louise into a beautiful park with picnic areas, children's playground, and a walking trail; utilizing the Ivy River for the Town's water supply; construction of the L. T. Sprinkle, Jr. Water Treatment Plant; building up of Weaver Boulevard as a major business district; construction of the new Public Works Building; and initiating the Senior Citizen's Christmas luncheon. Kathy was named 2009 Grand Marshall of the Weaverville Christmas Parade, honoring her for many years of service to the Town of Weaverville. She was very involved in her community, including serving as President of the North Buncombe Band Boosters for two consecutive terms.
After attending Blanton's Business College, Kathy worked at the Pentagon in Washington, DC for the Department of the Navy. She returned to NC and worked as a secretary for the Buncombe County Welfare Department. She retired from her position as the Finance Director for Buncombe County Social Services after 38 years of service.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and Lillie Coffey Edwards; and brothers, Floyd and Attley Edwards.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, John Young of Weaverville; daughter, Jennifer Mashburn and husband David of Burnsville; grandchildren Shaley Holmes of Weaverville, Savannah Haney of Swannanoa, and Jacob Mashburn of Burnsville; great-grandson, Ty Holmes of Weaverville; and sisters Eula Cordell and Bula Payne of Weaverville.
Her funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 24, 2015 in the Chapel of West Funeral Home with Pastor Johnny Byrd officiating. Burial will follow at McCracken Cemetery in Burnsville.
The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, February 23, 2015 at the funeral home.
At other times, the family will be accepting friends and family at the residence at 54 South Main St., Weaverville.
