Kathy Diann Greenfield

WEAVERVILLE– Kathy Diann Greenfield, age 68 of Weaverville, went to be with Jesus on Tuesday May 30, 2023, after battling ALS for seven months.

Kathy was born in Greenville, KY on November 5, 1954, to the late Frankie and Earline Watkins. She grew up in Owensboro, KY and was the first in her family to attend college, graduating from Murray State. She later received her Masters in Library Sciences from UNC Greensboro.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Gary Greenfield, and daughter, Jessica Greenfield.

Kathy loved Jesus with all her heart and strove to share his grace wherever she went. She inspired others with her contagious intellectual curiosity, her love for God’s creation, and her humble spirit. She participated in mission trips to Hawaii as a student and later to Haiti, where her kindness and generosity impacted so many. She worked at the public library in Richmond, VA and at several school libraries, including 20 years as head library media specialist at Covenant Day School in Matthews, NC. There she influenced countless young lives as a mentor and many students and colleagues found a home in her office.

Kathy loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, hiking, and exploring local breweries with Gary and Jessica. She was so excited to move to Reems Creek and be in the mountains after 26 years in Charlotte. A lifelong learner, she enjoyed taking classes at OLLI at the UNCA campus. She loved animals and worked as a veterinary technician in Nashville, TN. Loyal to the core, Kathy will be missed by many.

Her memorial service will be held at 2:30 pm on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at Weaverville United Methodist Church, with a visitation beginning at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her honor to the ALS Association or Asheville Humane Society.
