LILLIAN BRYSON CRAWFORD
CANDLER - Lillian Bryson Crawford, age 105 went to be with her Lord Tuesday, November 12, 2013. Formerly of Candler, she was a resident of WNC Baptist Retirement Home for the past 15 years. She was born to Fannie Caldwell Bryson and Harley Robert Bryson of Haywood County on July 16, 1908.
After high school graduation she attended 2 years of summer school sponsored by Duke University at Lake Junaluska to receive her teacher's certification. At age 18, Lillian went to teach in a 2 teacher school in the remote section of Cattaloochee in Haywood County.
She married Hugh V. Crawford on August 18, 1928, her husband of 70 years. In 1930, Lillian and Hugh moved to Enka Village due to Hugh accepting a job at American Enka Corporation. She substitute taught in various Buncombe County schools until she was 85. Lillian is predeceased by: husband, Hugh V. Crawford and sisters, Sarah B. Reynolds, Opal B. Crawford and Louise B. Messer.
She is survived by daughter, Carolyn C. and her husband Ray E. Sawyer; and several nieces and nephews.
Lillian was a long time member of Hominy Baptist Church where graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 15, 2013 in the church cemetery, 135 Candler School Road, Candler, NC 28715. Officiating will be Reverend Joe Yelton and Reverend Skip Gillikin.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts should be directed to: the Raymond and Carolyn Crawford Sawyer Athletic Scholarship at the Office of Institutional Advancement, Newberry College, 2100 College Street, Newberry, SC 29108 or the cemetery maintenance fund of Hominy Baptist Church, 135 Candler School Road, Candler, NC 28715.
