LUTHER MATT RICE WEAVERVILLE - Luther Matt Rice, age 87, of 973 Jupiter Road, died Saturday, April 5, 2014. Mr. Rice was born December 25, 1926, in Buncombe County where he lived all of his life. He retired from Brunner and Lay and Asheville Bit and Steel. He was the son of the late Robert and Dora Anders Rice and husband of the late Betty Ponder Rice who died in 2002. Surviving are his daughters, Suzy Parker and husband Rick, and Pat Shook and husband Chris of Weaverville; sons, Randy Rice and wife Mary of Weaverville, Daniel Rice and wife Trina of Asheville, and Bobby Rice and wife Jo Ann of Weaverville; a sister, Tilda Shell of Black Mountain; thirteen grandchildren; and nineteen great grandchildren. The family will receive friends 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Monday, April 7, 2014 at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville. His funeral service will follow at 7:30 p.m., Monday, in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, with Rev. Larry Sprouse officiating. Burial will be at a later date.
