ASHEVILLE - Marie Elliott Brown, 94, passed away on February 17, 2014 in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 22, 2014 in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, Weaverville with Rev. Jim McCoy officiating. Burial will be in Faith Fellowship Cemetery in Newdale, NC.
Family and friends are invited to a meal and greeting of friends at First Baptist Church, Weaverville fellowship hall from 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. prior to the funeral service at West Funeral Home.
Marie was born Thursday, October 23, 1919 in Burnsville. Her parents were Latt Columbus Elliott and Axie JoAnn Peterson. She had six brothers and sisters. She loved to hike in the woods and pick berries and flowers as child and as adult. She graduated from Burnsville High School in 1938 and she enjoyed playing softball and basketball.
After her graduation she proceeded on to business school in Greensboro from 1939-1940 and received her degree in secretarial science. At age 23, while working at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro she met Richard Brown an instructor, whom she later married on December 31, 1943 in Wilmington. They moved to Wichita Falls in 1949.
Marie worked in education and government secretarial positions in Wichita Falls and in North Carolina. When her children were growing up, she worked to help pay for the things in which they were involved. After they were grown, she worked to enjoy traveling around the world.
Marie was a member of First Baptist Church, Weaverville and enjoyed her Bible Study group, playing tennis and being a member of the Woodland Hills Garden Club.
She and Richard moved from Wichita Falls, Texas to Asheville in 1979. Finally, she got to enjoy those beautiful mountains in North Carolina. When Richard passed away in 2004, she remained in Asheville for about three more years until again moving to Wichita Falls to reside closer to her family.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Richard A. Brown; four brothers, Homer Elliott, Raley Elliott, Lloyd Elliott and Latt Elliott, Jr.
She is survived by her children, Linda Samuel and husband Mel McGyver of Dallas, Texas, Mike Brown and wife Leslie of Cocoa Beach, Florida and JoAnn Cox and husband Mike of Wichita Falls, Texas; a sister, Macie Keith of Charlotte, North Carolina; and her only grandchild, Jessica Shea Cox of Wichita Falls, Texas.
Marie's philosophy of life and what she thought gave life meaning was, "to do unto others as I would have them do unto me."
