BARNARDSVILLE—Marie Dillingham Haynes, 88, of Barnardsville passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 21, 2011, at the Brian Center in Weaverville. She was surrounded by her loving family.
A native of Buncombe County, Marie was born July 21, 1922. She was a daughter of the late Thomas Lester and Connie Bumgarner Dillingham. She was the devoted wife of the late J. Fred Haynes who died in 2007. Marie was also preceded in death by two brothers and one sister: Thomas L. Dillingham, Jr., William S. Hyatt, and Helen H. Shuford.
She was a longtime member of Dillingham Presbyterian Church where she spent many years singing in the choir. Marie retired from Buncombe County Schools after working 22 years in the cafeteria at Barnardsville Elementary School.
An endearing love for God and family, and Marie's humble and giving spirit defined her existence. Her wisdom in discovering true happiness through simplicity gave her a peace that few ever discover. This simplicity was found through singing in the choir and attending church, cooking countless meals for her extended family, and waving to passersby from her rocking chair on the front porch. Marie's faith was uncompromising and unwavering, and she found true joy in being of service to all around her.
"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God."
Marie is survived by two daughters: Leslie D. Haynes of Barnardsville and Mary Gale Teague and husband Jack of Asheville. Her two grandsons, Dr. Jack Teague, III, and wife Beth of Asheville and Dr. Travis L. Teague and wife Jessica of Kernersville, were the joy of her life. Marie adored her five great grandchildren: Jackson, Hannah Marie, Ashley, Fred, and Hunter. She is also survived by two sisters, Irene D. Richards and husband Ken of Asheville, Carolyn D. Banks and husband Scott of Barnardsville; and one brother, Hoyte Dillingham and wife Judy of Barnardsville. Marie had several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 1-2 PM, Monday, April 25, 2011, at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville. A celebration of Marie's life will follow the visitation at 2:30 in the Chapel at the funeral home. Burial will be in West Memorial Park in Weaverville immediately after the service, with Rev. Steve Conard officiating.
