Mary Alice Maney

Mary Alice Maney, age 95, of Barnardsville, died Sunday, January 15, 2023.  Mrs. Maney was born on April 29, 1927 in Greenville County, South Carolina and was a resident of Barnardsville since 1936.

She graduated from Barnardsville High School and completed studies at Cecils Business College.  She was employed as a business secretary at International Harvester Company in Asheville.  Mary Alice started at Barnardsville Post Office as a clerk in 1958 and was then postmistress for many years.  After retirement, she and Lee enjoyed traveling, gardening and sharing food with many.  She loved her Sunday School ladies dearly and sang in the choir, a quartet, and a trio. 

Mary Alice was the daughter of the late Walter and Bonnie Martin Compton.  She was also preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, C. Lee Maney; brother, Donald Ray Compton (at age 4) and Don Maney’s daughter, Leisa Maney Morrow.

Surviving her are daughters, Linda Maney Sprinkle and husband Larry, Brenda Maney Sprinkle and husband Chuck; brother, Myles Compton and wife Carolyn; grandchildren, Michael Sprinkle and wife Dakotah, Jeff Sprinkle and wife Crystal; great-grandson Dustin Sprinkle; step great-grandchildren Camryn and Jake Shepherd; special cousin, who was like a son to her, Don Maney and wife Joyce; Leisa’s husband Will and their sons, Crayton and Craig; and several nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 26 in Barnardsville Baptist Church, of which she was the oldest member, with Reverends Fred Miller and Steve Ackerman officiating.  Burial will follow in West Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 25 at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Avenue, Weaverville.
