ASHEVILLE—Mary Alice Skipper Thompson Lehr, 89 of 172 Cumberland Ave., died Friday, December 11, 2009 at the home of her son.
Mrs. Lehr was born May 6, 1920 in Carbon Hill, Ala. She was born the eighth and youngest child to the late James Calvin Skipper and Sallie Allice Donahoo Skipper. She married Vernon Stevens Thompson in Arkansas in 1941 and resided in Oklahoma City for approximately 30 years. She married Eugene C. Lehr in 1972 and they moved to Weaverville in the early 1980's. She was a member of Piney Mountain Baptist Church. She was an avid seamstress and spent many hours researching her family history. She was a member of the D.A.R., Buncombe County Genealogical Society and was listed among "First Families of Old Buncombe".
Preceding her in death were her husband Eugene, who died in 2007, and her daughter, Janice Sue Thompson. Surviving are her daughter, Onie Crawford and husband Ron of Moscow, Idaho; son Dr. James Thompson and wife Diane of Asheville; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
At Mary's request there will be no formal funeral service.
