WEAVERVILLE - Mattie A. Buckner passed away at the age of 97 on Monday, March 22, 2010, in Snellville, Georgia. She was born on November 4, 1912, in Barnardsville, NC, and was the youngest daughter of Job Franklin Anders and Mary Elizabeth Brown, residents in Barnardsville from the early 1900's. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret A. Seaborn, and brother, Wm. Ernest Anders. She was a lifelong resident of Weaverville and Barnardsville until she moved to Atlanta, GA, in 1994 to be closer to her daughter, Judy B. McGowan in Decatur, GA. She was a graduate of Barnardsville High School. In 1936, she married Henry J. Buckner of Barnardsville and prior to his death on Christmas Day in 1991, they had been married for 55 years. She enjoyed being a homemaker and her lifelong pleasures were cooking, sewing, church activities, having friends drop by to visit, and she had a keen interest in everyone in the family. She and her husband were long-time members of the Weaverville Baptist Church. In addition to her daughter, she is survived by her granddaughter, Angela Kathleen McGowan of Decatur, GA; her sister, Dorcas R. Mabrey, age 101, of Asheville; her nephew, C. William Seaborn of Ormond Beach, FL; her niece, Dorothy A. Embler of Candler, NC; dear friend and cousin, Mrs. Gladys M. Radford of Mars Hill; and several other nieces in Thomasville, NC, and Woodstock, GA. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Mirela and Michael Schiesser at the Precup Personal Care Home in Snellville for taking such loving care of her for the past four years. In addition, many thanks go to the caregivers associated with Compassionate Care Hospice for their very attentive care during the past year. Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 27, at 11 AM at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville, NC, with Rev. Jim McCoy officiating. Burial will be in West Memorial Park.
