MARS HILL – Michael Dean Fisher, age 62, of Mars Hill, passed away Friday, July 19, 2024, at the Solace Center, with family by his side. A highly decorated veteran of the US Air Force, he fought valiantly against prostate cancer for 12 years.
Mike was born to the late Catherine Orr and Claude Frank Fisher on July 5, 1962, in Hendersonville, North Carolina. He attended Hendersonville High School and received degrees from the Community College of the Air Force and Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College. He enlisted in the US Air Force at the age of 18. He valued this service highly and attained the rank of Tech Sergeant. As a part of this service, he became an Aircraft Maintenance Specialist on the F4, T38B and A10 airframes. He later cross trained as a Flight Engineer on the C-5 Galaxy. He was highly decorated throughout his career and most proud of his Air Medals.
His loved ones will remember him as being kind, caring, and one who would give you the shirt off of his back. He enjoyed fly fishing, camping, spending time outdoors, and seeing some amazing places in the USA. He cherished every moment with family and friends. Oh, and he loved spending time with his Blue Heeler Spike.
Mike is survived by his wife of 28 years, Amanda Staples Fisher. He is also survived by his daughters, Eliza Rhiannon Fisher and Molly Emma Fisher; nephew, Christopher Bennett Lentz; sister, Cathy Fisher Jennings (Tom); uncle, Carroll Orr; and his beloved dog, Spike.
At his request, no formal services will be held. He expressed a wish for his cremated remains to be scattered in some of his favorite places he visited as well as places he planned to go but time did not allow.
Mike asked that if anyone would like donations can be made in memory of Michael Fisher to Duke Center for Prostate and Urologic Cancers, 300 W. Morgan St., Suite 1000, Durham, NC 27701. Or for online donations: https://gifts.duke.edu/dci?designation=3918781
