NEVA BRITTAIN HYER ASHEVILLE - Neva Brittain Ballard Hyer, age 93, of Asheville died Wednesday, December 17, 2014. Mrs. Hyer was born October 25, 1921 in McDowell County and lived most of her life in Western North Carolina. She was a daughter to the late Reverend Phoenicia H. and Minnie Cline Brittain. Neva taught in Buncombe County Schools and organized a Special Education class at Emma Elementary School and later at Leicester Elementary School where she taught 4th grade until her retirement. On August 24, 1941 Neva gave her life to the Lord at Balls Creek Campground and was a lifelong Methodist. Her last membership was at Biltmore United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Paul J. Hyer, Sr. who died in 2010 and brothers, Arbela and Elvin Brittain. Surviving are her daughter, Wanda Ballard Franklin and husband Dick of Cumming, GA; son, Richard Ballard of St. Augustine, FL; sister, Vista Bustle of McLeansville; brother, Hugh Brittain of Shelby; grandson, Kenneth B. Franklin and wife Alison and their daughter Charlotte Marie of Atlanta, GA. Her funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, December 21, 2014, in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville, with Dr. Tim Brittain and Reverend Wendell Brittain officiating. Burial will be in West Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Sunday prior to the service. Donations in Mrs. Hyer's memory may be made to the Methodist Home for Children Foundation, 1041 Washington St., Raleigh, NC 27605.
