Norman Joe Payne, age 77, of Barnardsville went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 11, 2013 at the John F. Keever Solace Center after a brief illness. Norman was born May 26, 1936 in Madison County to the late Joe and Clara Worley Payne. He was the loving husband of 50 years to the late Peggy Edwards Payne who died in 2007. Norman retired from The Grove Park Inn after 36 years of service. He attended Chestnut Grove Baptist Church. In addition to his parents and his wife he was preceded in death by his brothers, Dolman Payne of California and Roy Payne of Asheville. Norman was the loving father and father-in-law, of Sandra Wells and husband Bruce of Leicester. He is also survived by one very special granddaughter Bridgett Crawford and husband Rhoby of Fairview, who he loved with all his heart; along with brother, Bobby Payne and wife Linda of Barnardsville; sisters, Joy Woody of Mars Hill, Wanda Robinson and husband Richard of Weaverville, Minnie Durand and husband Ray of Georgia, Sue Ann Maynor and husband Lewis of Leicester, Jean Moss and husband Lloyd of Asheville and several nieces, nephews and friends. His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Avenue, Weaverville with Rev. Brad Willis, Rev. Worth Emory and Rev. Roger Crawford officiating. Burial will be in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory, Asheville. Serving as pallbearers will be Rodney Payne, Charles Maynor, Joe Maynor, Jeff Maynor, Larry Moss, Terry Banks, Chris Banks and Randall Metcalf. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the residence. Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Chestnut Grove Baptist Church, PO Box 522, Barnardsville, NC 28709.
