Onie Griffin Higgins

WEAVERVILLE—Onie Griffin Higgins, age 94, of Weaverville, died Wednesday, April 3, 2013. Mrs. Higgins was born June 7, 1918, in Buncombe County where she had lived all of her life. She was formerly employed at Swannanoa Laundry for 12 years. Onie was a caretaker for many loved ones and loved her family and working in her yard. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Ida Mae Corn Griffin; husband, Robert Collis Higgins; and daughter, Margaret Kuykendall. Surviving are her daughters, Beulah Wilson and husband Hal of Hickory, Betty Ray and husband C.L. of Asheville, and Debbie Rice and husband Basil of Asheville; son, William James "Bill" Higgins and wife Lynda of Las Vegas, Nev.; sister, Bashie King and husband Jess of Asheville; 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Her funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, April 5, 2013, in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville, with Rev. Worth Emory officiating. Burial will be in West Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. Friday, prior to the service at the funeral home. Flowers are welcome.
