Almaranda Patsy Farris “Pat” died peacefully Sunday, February 2, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was born June 25, 1934, in Princeton, W.Va. to John and Mary Long.
She is survived by her loving husband of 74 years, Walter. She also leaves a daughter, Vicki Miesbauer of Clemson, S.C.; grandsons, Mark (Kristin) of Clemson and Jeffrey (Katie Plumb) of Bozeman, Mont.; two great granddaughters, Kaylee and Allie Miesbauer of Clemson; and dear friends Rick and Terrie Scarboro of Weaverville, N.C.
Pat and Walt had a love story for the ages with Walter faithfully caring for her as dementia slowly took her life the past twelve years. After he retired from the Air Force the pair made their home in Weaverville before later moving to Clemson.
Pat was a founding member of Christ United Methodist Church in Weaverville, served on Lay Witness Teams throughout the southeast and was also a former member of Weaverville Garden Club.
Pat lived her Christian faith through service to others, first as a Red Cross hospital volunteer while an Air Force wife in Europe. The family remembers their house always filled with young airmen on holidays, Pat feeding them and giving them a taste of home.
Friends near and far remember Pat for her delicious cooking, preparing meals for Christ UMC daycare, Wednesday night suppers, ministers meetings, Kiwanis breakfasts as well as the many mission trips for United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) and Habitat for Humanity. She worked hard on relief trips to rebuild communities devastated by floods and hurricanes, and the building teams loved coming back to her fantastic suppers.
Food was Pat’s love language and her ministry, delivering countless meals to the sick, new mothers and grieving families. She also baked bread for communion, church visitors and hungry friends and family.
She was instrumental in the founding of North Buncombe Samaritan Ministries (which later became Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministries), volunteering alongside her beloved Walter to pick up food for them until she had to have a friend (Carol Young) drive her to continue the work.
Her Christian faith was ever-present as was her compassion for anyone struggling in life; she was often seen praying in stores with strangers.
She leaves many memories from extended family reunions, known not only for cooking for the entire family for several days but also for sneaking snacks to the kids, her warm laughter in the kitchen, and her ruthlessness in a game of dominos.
Her funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, February 7, 2025, at Christ United Methodist Church, 81 Garrison Branch Rd., #2, Weaverville, NC 28787 with the Reverends Mike Holder and Ray Kiess officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:15 – 2:15 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow at West Memorial Park, Weaverville.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministries (ABCCM), 1845 Brevard Road, Arden, NC 28704.
West Family Funeral Services is honored to be serving Pat’s family. Condolences may be offered to the family under her obituary at www.westfamilyfuneralservices.com.
