Ponese Evelyn Buckner

WEAVERVILLE-Ponese Evelyn Buckner, 84, went to be with the Lord on August 14, 2023, at WNC Baptist Home.

She was born on May 17, 1939 in Buncombe County where lived all her life. She is the daughter of the late Clyde and Evelyn Sluder Buckner. Ponese is preceded in death by her sister, Martha Worley Rich; her son, Terry Buckner; her grandson, Timothy Cole; and her in laws, Bill and Dolly Buckner.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Wilburn Buckner; her daughter, Vickie Benkelman (Dave); her son, Jeff Buckner (Cynthia); a sister, Peggy Farnsworth (Lee); sister-in-law, Dorothy Roberts (Gary); grandchildren, Jason Cole and Monica Wright (Fredd); great grandchildren, Garrett Buckner and Issac Webb (Ashley); her great-great grandson, Zeb Webb; and several nieces and nephews.

Ponese was an avid animal lover and went above and beyond taking care of animals- cats, dogs, and the goats in her yard. She was a very loving person, and she was very loved. She cared for her son, Terry Buckner, throughout his illness, and lived at the nursing home for years to care for him. Ponese gave all of her love to others.

Her funeral service will be held at 2:30 pm Friday, August 18, 2023, in the Chapel of West Funeral Home with Mr. Lee Farnsworth presiding. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 pm on Friday, one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in West Memorial Park following the service.
