WEAVERVILLE—Devoyd Smith Ezell, age 69, of Weaverville, died Saturday, November 22, 2008.
Mr. Ezell was born February 20, 1939 in Polk County and was a resident of Weaverville for 30 years. In 1957 he graduated from R.S. Central High School. Mr. Ezell was a decorated Vietnam Veteran and retired after serving 20 years in the Navy as a Naval Aerographer with the rank of Chief (E-7). He also retired from National Climatic Data Center after working 19 years. Red was an avid tennis player as well. He was the son of the late Blaynard and Alma LoDeana Scoggin Ezell.
Surviving is his wife, Martha Long Ezell; daughter, Ellen Mills and husband Scott of Flat Creek; sons, Jon David Ezell and wife Natalie of Hendersonville and Stephen Philip Ezell and wife Heather Sams of Weaverville; sisters, Bernice King and husband Doc of Rutherfordton, Opal Henderson of Rose Hill, Judy Gragg and husband Bill of Connelly Springs and Sylvia Becerra and husband Laureano of Ooltewah, Tenn.; brothers, Macel Ezell and wife Carol of E. Lansing, Mich., Ivan Ezell of Burleson Texas, Lee Ezell and wife Sheila of Charlotte and Mahlon Ezell and wife Pam of Morganton; two grandchildren, Julia and Dylan Mills.
Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville with his uncle, Rev. J.M. Ezell and his cousin, Rev. Clemmy Queen officiating. Burial will be in Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Black Mountain.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
