REX HARWOOD BARNARDSVILLE - Rex Harwood, age 63, of 444 Haw Branch Road, died Saturday, August 16, 2014. Rex was born February 11, 1951 in Buncombe County where he had lived all of his life. He was a self-employed Rock Mason for many years and prior to his illness he had been a Fireman with the Barnardsville Fire Dept. for the past 10 years. Rex was a member of Dillingham Presbyterian Church and liked to hunt and fish. Son of the late William T. and Viola Lipe Harwood, he was also preceded in death by brothers, W.T. Harwood, Jr., Harry Fenwick, and Mack Fenwick. Surviving are his son, Jayson Harwood and wife Malena and their son John Harwood of Barnardsville; sisters, Betty H. Smith and husband John, Joann McCracken, Sue Wright, Wauline Pacheo, and Lucille Ducker; step-son, Mark McMahan; and step-grandson, Avery McMahan. His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 21, 2014, in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville, with Revs. Richard Hicks and Worth Emory officiating. Burial will be in Lewis Memorial Park. Firefighter honors will be given by the Buncombe County Firefighter Honor Guard. The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.
